Planning for contextual review

Today we were introduced to the contextual review which is a piece of writing that we have to complete for the course.

First we chose an outcome that marked a turning point in our work. I chose my multiples outcome and uploaded that:

Give a short description of your important piece of work: What is the concept, medium/material, audience/user for this piece of work? - using a the humble and disposable material of jay cloth, make an outcome that is elegant, contrasting with the actual use of this material (cleaning).
What was your thinking when you produced this work? How did you respond to the brief? - I thought about how I could manipulate this fabric to create something unique and pretty. in response to the brief I used multiple sheets of jay cloth and stitched them together in a sequence
Was there a specific research source(s) that informed the production of this work? - I was inspired by my research into Tudor and Elizabethan Ruffs, An accessory worn by nobles.
Why is the selected work important to you? - this project is important as it challenged me to make something beautiful out something extremely mundane and disposable. I think it really pushed me to think in new ways and discover lots of methods of manipulating a material.
Which questions does this work raise? - does art have to be made from luxurious materials? - is art about finding beauty in the mundane? - how can I make something visually appealing using boring materials?
How has your approach/ thinking changed since creating this work? - Now I am more resourceful with my designs, using materials that are not necessarily expensive or conventional. I think this makes my work harder, but also makes me feel more rewarded.

This helped me to decide on my key theme for my contextual review. I decided to focus on the idea of "finding beauty in the mundane" through my designs.
